The differences between natural and fake diamonds
Diamonds are fascinating, enigmatic and rare. Through their mesmerizing brilliance and the skill of master jewellers, they embellish and enrich the style and elegance of any woman who is passionate about beauty.
If we asked several people "What is the first word that comes to your mind when you think of diamond? ", you can bet most of them would say "brilliant". True fact, but besides this wonderful characteristic, do you know how to recognize a genuine diamond from a fake one?
The word 'diamond' comes from the Greek 'adamas', which means indestructible. Diamonds are the only stones composed of a single chemical element, carbon C. They are made entirely of carbon atoms, crystallizing in a cubic (isometric) system.
Before youbuy a diamond, you shouldbeawarethatthere arenatural, naturally formed diamondsandfakediamonds, which imitate natural diamonds but are notcarbon-basedcompoundsanddo not havethe samephysical and opticalproperties as natural diamonds.
Natural diamonds
In nature, diamonds are formed 120-200 km deep underground under high pressure and temperature. What's remarkable is that these beautiful stones you see in jewelry are billions of years old, hence their uniqueness and spectacularity. According to geologists, the first 'liberation' of diamonds took place around 2.5 billion years ago, and the most recent one 45 million years ago.
The carbon that makes up diamonds comes from the melting of pre-existing rocks in the Earth's crust, which are abundant in carbon atoms. To form, diamond crystals must be subjected to certain conditions, such as high temperature, pressure and the right chemical composition. There's no guarantee that these carbon atoms will form diamonds, but even if they do, it takes thousands of years for diamonds to even come close to the surface of the Earth's crust.
Fake (imitation)diamonds
Fake orimitationdiamonds are synthetic stones thatresemble orimitate natural diamonds, but they are notcarbon-based compounds, nor do they havethe sameproperties as pure diamonds.
Although at first glance these stones look like genuine gemstones, they are very different. Much less expensive than natural and synthetic diamonds, imitations are made from materials such as cubic zirconia, quartz and glass.
Natural and fakediamonds - howcan youtellthedifference?
The main differencebetweennatural and syntheticdiamonds isclarity. Fake diamonds are created in a controlled process designed to minimize flaws and, as a result, there arefewer flaws in theircrystalstructure. The best way for abuyerto find outwhether a diamond is natural or fake isto ask forits certificate. Certificates issued by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America), for example, specifywhether the stone isnatural or fake.
Anotherfeature thatdistinguishes thetwo types of diamond is price. A lab-grown diamond is muchcheaperthan a natural diamond of thesame clarity and quantity
Because of thewayit isformedanditshardness, anatural diamondis a legendin themaking, areal treasureforitsowner. Its value isgiven by itsrarity and mystery that for millions of years has been hiddendeep in the depths of the Earth.Truelovers of jewelry and diamondswill surely appreciate the uniqueness of a natural diamond, and not the cost of a synthetic one.
Another test would be placing the brilliant in cold water. If it is a genuine brilliant, it retains its outline. If not, the imitation will lose its outline, and the refraction will not be the same.
Clean steam will also help us distinguish a diamond from an imitation. Once near the steam, the stone immediately recovers if it's brilliant. If not, it will stay vaporized for longer.
